STUDER S21 and S31

Within five times the width of a bacterium

Brüsch operates two STUDER cylindrical grinding machines, an S21 and the more precise S31, capable of achieving surface finishes down to Ra 0.01 µm and Rz 0.4 µm, with dimensional tolerances of ±0.005 mm.

To put that into perspective, a single bacterium measures approximately 0.001 mm in width, meaning the dimensional tolerances held on the STUDER machines are within five times the width of a single bacterium, placing the facility among the most capable contract grinders in the precision component sector.

Cylindrical grinding covers external and internal diameters from Ø5 mm to Ø50 mm and component lengths up to 1,000 mm, making the department suitable for both miniature medical components and larger industrial shafts and housings. Primary applications include medical orthopaedic tooling, where surface finish directly affects cutting performance and biocompatibility, and marine and industrial applications including ship motor components.
